Durham, NH (20 Mar 2000)—The Advisory Board of the Professor John. C. Rouman Classical Lecture Series is pleased to announce that the 2000 lecture will be presented on May 3, 2000 at 7:30 pm at the Field House of the University of New Hampshire in Durham by the world-renown scholar, write, and lecturer, Dr. Brunhilde Ridgeway. The title of her talk will be "Laokoon: The Reading of a Masterpiece." Dr. Ridgway has taught at Bryn Mawr College for many years, serving as head of the archaeology department and supervising many these and dissertations. The recipient of many academic honors and awards, she has authored more than one dozen authoritative texts and nearly 100 articles on Greek and Roman sculpture. Her most recent work, Hellenistic Sculpture 2: The Styles of ca. 200-100 B.C., is scheduled to be released in May. Among her plethora of accomplishments she has been the recipient of the Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award, a National Gold Medalist in the Professor of the Year Program, and the recipient of the prestigious Gold Medal from the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement.

The Professor John C. Rouman Classical Lecture Series, named for one of the University of New Hampshire's most distinguished scholars and faculty members, was established in 1997 by the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation to promote and enhance awareness of the Classics in New Hampshire, throughout New England, and beyond. Citing strong popularity of the Classics nationwide, Advisory Board Co-Chair May Papoutsy stated, "The intellectual and artistic achievements of the ancient world are timeless, their lessons relevant to every facet of our daily lives, form science and literature, to politics and religion. The Classics will endure for as long as we continue to learn from them." Topics explored each year by this series cover a range of subjects within Greco-Roman civilization including mythology, literature, history, philosophy, art, and language, and feature lectures by internationally recognized scholars.
