Impact of Modern Tsunamis: Papua New Guinea 1998 & Southeast Asia 2004
Tsunamis, whether caused by earthquakes or volcanic explosions, have tremendous impacts on coastal communities wherever they occur. Robert Welsch and John MacDonald discuss their research about the consequences of the 1998 tsunami at Aitape, Papua New Guinea, which killed one-third of the population of four small communities. Nicholas Taranto considers the impact of the much more devastating recent tsunami that killed more than 150,000 people in Indonesia and Thailand.
