As Fall Temps Dip, Assumption Congregation Still Basks Warmly in Success of 3rd Annual Festival |

| DRACUT, MA - The Third Annual Festival at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church on August 20, 21 and 22, was a great success. This year we had beautiful weather and with all the hard work of volunteers, parishioners are calling it the best festival yet. The whole weekend was just crowded with people. His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, of Boston, made a special effort on Saturday, August 21 to visit the festival. This truly made Parish Council President Nikitas Flaris, Mrs. Harriet Geulakos who is President of the Philoptochos Society, and members of the Church very happy. |

| Mrs. Geulakos said, "Everyone has worked so very hard for this festival. All the ladies made these pastries by hand. I, myself made 500 pieces of Tiganides. The other ladies made all the rest." It took many hours of preparation just to prepare the large variety of pastries that were sold, including: baklava, kataifi, melomakarona (finikia), kourambiethes (shortbread cookies dusted w/confectioners sugar), koulourakia (braided butter cookies), galaktobouriko (Greek custard with filo), and loukoumathes (delicious honey puffs with syrup.) In addition, volunteers worked many hours to prepare and serve a full menu of dinners: souvlaki (charcoal broiled marinated cubes of lamb on a skewer; chicken), which was charcoal broiled; loucanico (Greek sausage sautéed in lemon and seasonings), and keftethes (Greek meatballs simmered in tomato and wine sauce). These dinners included rice pilaf, salad, rolls and butter. Other foods that were offered were pastitsio, spinach pie (spanakopita), dolmathes (Stuffed Grape Leaves), and many other items. In an ages-old festival tradition, parishioners cooked and barbequed whole lambs, a favorite for folks who like it served this way instead of lamb on a skewer. Just thinking about all this can make someone hungry all over again! Assumption Parish is already planning next year’s event and invites all to plan on coming to the 4th Annual Greek Festival in August 2006. |
