Alexis Scandalis Genung has been painting since she was a small child, when, after seeing a film about a Dutch painter, she decided to become an artist.

Her first study of art began at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and continued in Paris, Greece, and the University of California.

Alexis paints with an eye for precision and detail, yet imparts a feeling of serenity and, often, a hint of whimsy. Possibly due to her Greek-American heritage, and from frequent visits to the islands, her paintings are awash with light and color. Her mastery of clean and simple line furthers her personal purpose -- to help bring beauty and calmness into an often troubled world.

"I want my images to bring out the happiness and goodness which I firmly believe exist in each and every person, no matter the circumstance," Alexis has said. "I like the idea of reminding a person of pleasurable moments of the past, or inspiring him or her to create new ones in the future. If we, the viewer and I, can accomplish this together, I feel there is hope for our world."  She paints both in watercolor and oil, portraying landscapes, florals, and figures.  She has a special affinity for scenes of her ancestral Greece, communicating the serenity of that ancient land with a unique, uplifting quality.

Alexis Genung is co-founder of the Hellenic International Artists Foundation, founded in 1993 to promote Hellenic culture and artists of Hellenic descent through the arts.. The Foundation has been particularly active in organizing and participating in Greek-American fund-raising events for the communities of Northern California, especially the last two exhibitions benefiting the Center for Modern Greek Studies at California State University at San Francisco.

She makes her home and studio in Fair Oaks, California, where she lives with her husband Michael, and two studio cats, Shoatie and Emma. More of Alexis' work can be seen at her online gallery, and at the website of the Hellenic International Artist's Foundation.
