Mary L. Netos Passes Away



PORTLAND - Mary L. Netos, 90, died April 23, 2006.

She was born April 5, 1916 in Portland, a daughter of Eustace G. and Helen L. Lekousi. She attended the West School and graduated from Portland High School in the Class of 1934.

Mary graduated from the Gorham Normal School in 1937 and went on to earn a B.S. from the University of New Hampshire in 1943.

She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Pownal, later teaching at the North School in Portland.

In 1945, she married Philip N. Netos and moved to Indiana. Once in Indiana she began teaching in the public schools in Hammond, retiring after 27 years.

She was a longtime member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church until her return to Maine in 2002. In Portland, she was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. As well, she was a member of the Daughters of Penelope and a member of the Greek Women's University Club.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Philip; two brothers James and Andrew and a sister, Aphrodite (Lekousi) Tsatsos.

Surviving are her three children, Jasmine N. Lampadarios and her husband George, Helen P. Netos and her husband William Erdman and Nicholas P. Netos; grandchildren, Eleni Anastacia Lampadarios and Maria Katina Lampadarios; brothers, George Lekousi and his wife Helen and Arthur Lekousi and his wife Freda ; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 3-5 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26 at Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. Funeral services and burial will take place in Munster, Ind., on Saturday, April 29.
